Vendor Tribute! | True Photography

Another year later, and True Photography is still one of our favorite event photographers!

Their work is so unique in its vibrancy and evident zeal for life.

We find they’re perfect for potential clients who want unusual angles, priceless candid shots, and unparalleled service.

As another hard-working vendor, ready to help others at events, they always take incredible pictures of our food and let our service shine!

Out of the hundreds of pictures they’ve shared with us, we couldn’t begin to choose our favorites.

We love recommending them to our clients because we know the client will be thrilled with the experience and the product every single time.

We hope that this process goes both ways and  True Photography reached out to us with this statement from a client:

My fiancé and I just booked our wedding at Mt. Woodson Castle in Ramona, CA. We fell in love with the venue thanks, in large part, to your photos that Mt. Woodson features on their website (we live in Washington DC and are unable to visit any venues in person).”

They amaze us with their eye for detail and light-hearted imaginative feel to all their shots!

We can’t thank True Photography enough for all their hard work and constant reliability throughout our time working with each other.

Without our clients, locations, vendors, and even staff, the advertising attempts that we make would need to be expanded by hundreds–if not thousands–of dollars.

Even so, nothing beats word-of-mouth recommendations from an excellent, trusted source.

The historic Martin Johnson House, sheltered beneath grand cypress trees with sweeping views of the La Jolla beaches, is the oceanfront cottage of your event dreams.

According to the official website, “the rustic cottage was one of the earliest additions to the Scripps Institution of Oceanography campus…”, constructed in 1916.

The institute still manages the venue, along with its sister sites: The Birch Aquarium and The Robert Payne Scripps Sea Side Forum.

“Once used as a home for Scripps professors and their families, the refurbished cottage and grounds now offer a charming coastal setting ideal for social events ranging from business meetings to wedding receptions.”

“The Glow” | San Diego Wedding and Event Planning

Movie Magic Come To Life!

We’ve been pretty vocal about how much we live for this defining moment during our weddings.

There’s a certain magic that happens at the end of each ceremony that we wish we could bottle and share with the world.

After a happy couple says their vows, a new tension starts to build.

They have their Big Kiss, everyone cheers, they turn to the crowd, and BAM!!

It pours out of the faces of the newlyweds as they walk back down the aisle, hand in hand.

Centerpiece Inspiration | San Diego Event Coordination

So many details to consider when planning decor, and so many rules!

Thankfully, when it comes to the table centerpieces, the goals can be broken down to a few main steps:

The floral arrangement below by Four Season Flowers

Be Imaginative!

First and foremost is to have fun with your ideas for these centerpieces. Your guests are going to be sitting in front of these most of the night, so make sure they’re memorable. Otherwise, why bother with the effort? The picture below came from a wedding venue where the Bride chose to make the centerpieces herself, and the bay-side location inspired her to set up this simple and affordable beachy display.

First, she collected the (FREE) sand, shells, and stones from her local beaches over the months she was wedding planning. Then she snagged the vases, gold leaf, and extra-large gold metal rings from a craft shop. She hand-painted each jar meant for the candles, each shell with the gold leaf, and used the gold rings as guides for the last step: floral accents. Sticking some adorable succulents into the sand-filled vases was a piece of cake, and the eucalyptus just needed a little wire to adhere it to the rings for that perfect circle. Put it all together, and she got an easy-breezy centerpiece! It was simple, affordable, and memorably unique.

Content!

Don’t be afraid to reach outside of the flower shop. Almost anything can be used in a centerpiece, whether its candles, vases, garland, flowers, lanterns, or even food! Trust us, artichokes and heads of lettuce can be beautiful if paired with the right table decor.

Below, the florist used different shaped vases of varying heights to hold all the eye-catching flowers not commonly seen in the wedding world. No two flowers looked exactly alike, but collaboratively they harmonized because nothing seemed unbalanced or out of place!

Multiple Uses

Plan on moving those statement pieces!

Events rarely keep the guests in a single space the entire night. An average wedding will move the party up to four times over the day from ceremony space, to cocktail hour, the dining area, then finally to the dance floor. Using the same arrangements for different places will give you the most bang for your buck, without diminishing their splendor! What decorated the aisle can decorate the sweetheart table. Those Bridesmaids bouquets are now for the dining tables. In the picture below, we can see how some centerpieces even double as favors for guests to take home at the end.

Seasonal Savings

Plan to use flowers that are in season around the month of your event! It will be easier on your florist, and you’ll surely receive the freshest arrangements guaranteed not to wilt halfway through the night.

Some flowers, like roses and succulents, thrive all year, but asking for gardenias in the middle of December might make for a sad display on the table, and in your wallet. Some of the best Summer and Spring flowers are:

  • Sweet Peas
  • Cherry/Apple Blossoms
  • Hydrangeas
  • Peonies
  • Daisies

The most popular Winter and Fall flowers:

  • Dahlias
  • Sunflowers
  • Violets
  • Freesia
  • Ivy/Evergreen

The Knot has lists of the top ten flowers for every season for more flower options.

Size Matters

Considering table shape and size while planning your centerpiece is necessary. It never hurts to test out your plans ahead of time to save you in the long run. Hindsight is 20/20, but not very helpful at the moment.

Some general guidelines are: If your tables are long, the “center” is technically more significant, so plan accordingly. The opposite goes for smaller, more intimate tables. So try not to engulf the Bride and Groom behind a tidal-wave of flowers if they’re not at a giant head table to even everything out.

Think “Cohesive Ambiance”

The centerpieces should be a continuation of the event’s overall theme and appealing to the eye, but not so over-the-top distracting that it seems like somebody dumped a whole shrubbery on the table. They should tie together the room decor with the table settings. Smoothly draw attention from the grand statement pieces to small accents. The picture below is of a table that we think blended effortlessly with its surroundings.

The attention-catchers were the silver metallic accents and peacock green of the napkins, so the florist chose to accentuate those with some refreshing eucalyptus and clouds of white flowers. The tables naturally reflected the abundance of natural light in the room, and everything seemed to glow!

Do the “Wilson Test”

We highly encourage varying the heights of your decor pieces. It creates a positive depth and dimension to the table. What we tend to warn our clients against is a centerpiece that impedes line of sight and is too tall for guests to see each other from across the table.

No matter how beautiful, if the guests have to lean around your centerpieces to be part of the conversation, they’ll see it as a joke and remember the inconvenience instead of the artistry. The “Wilson Test” is from the TV show Home Improvement. The next-door neighbor character, Wilson Wilson Jr., was only ever seen from the eyes up over the wooden fence separating each backyard. Once you finish setting up your centerpiece, sit down with a friend on the opposite side of your arrangement, and see if their whole face is visible. Wilson was great on the show, but maybe not the best at your event.

Rule of thumb is to keep your decorations no higher than about 10″ from the tabletop. If you’ve got grand designs that reach for the sky, we say try to stay as skinny as possible between 10″-20″ from the tabletop and make sure to use sturdy tables! Too tall and things get wobbly.

See Beyond Your Event

What happens to your centerpieces at the end of the night?

Are they going back with the florist? Home with you or the guests? The night doesn’t end for you when the music stops. Consider your transportation options–meaning packing boxes, vehicles, and size constraints before the day of the event! This way, you’ll never be stuck at the end of the night, exhausted, past your check-out time, saddled with twelve flower arrangements, and an irritated venue manager with no ride trying to figure out what to do.

Bottom Line, Do What You Think Looks Good!

Keeping our guidelines in mind will hopefully help point you in the right direction, but it all comes down to eyeballing your handiwork and being flexible at the moment of the event. Be willing to play around with your centerpiece ideas and remember to stay true to yourself and your theme!

Thanks to all the fantastic photographers and florists mentioned above!

Your work is amazing!

Wedding Themes We Love! | Part Five | San Diego Catering

Welcome to Part Five of our Wedding Themes We Love (WTWL) Series!

Are you looking for a more laid back, even “Lazy Loving,” kind of vibe for your wedding?

Our experts found a couple of great theme examples paired with the perfect dining experience for each!

West Coast/ Beachy

Beach weddings are always a favorite for couples and guests!

The soft breezes, salty air, and vacation escapes are reminiscent of Part Four of this series if you want to mix a little tropical travel into your wedding motif.

Photographer: Alyssa Boynton Photography

Have fun with your bridal party, and incorporate some cute beach details into their ensemble.

We love these mermaid earrings, and groomsmen could sport some themed socks or ties on the big day!

Photographer: Logan Cole Photography

This smart couple used an old oar from a thrift shop for their sign-in book, and it’ll look so chic as decor in their future home!

The best part of this theme is that anything that washes up could be perfect decor with a little TLC.

Spice up your linen options with a fun pattern.

These broad stripes are fun and just nautical enough to give the tablescape the right feel.

The escort shells are eco-friendly, long-lasting, and so darn cute!

Just find some on the beach and make a night of it with your friends and their most delicate handwriting.

Pull centerpiece inspiration from the beach!

We love the look of this “Coral Garden” made from a few succulents and a sea star.

Have some fun in the sun!

Beach weddings are the perfect excuse to let loose. Ask your photographer to have fun with your photo opportunities, and we’re sure they won’t disappoint!

Speaking of the Sun…

Custom shades are the perfect wedding favor for your guests!

Photographer: True Photography

Beach and Beer go together, like Love and Marriage.

Keep those brews chilled on a warm beach day with a custom beer koozie favor!

Photographer: True Photography. Venue: Scripps Seaside Forum

This theme is as beautiful as it is low-key, views like this are the best backdrops in the world!

Photographer: Alyssa Boynton Photography. Venue: Scripps Seaside Forum

Deep blue goblets and watercolor table numbers are an elegant way to keep the ocean idea subtly running through your tablescape.

Photographer: Alyssa Boynton Photography

Repurpose that junk surfboard for your seating chart!

All this idea took was a little black chalkboard paint and a steady hand.

Venue: Darlington House of La Jolla

This theme is super flexible for dining styles, and our experts love the idea of a Buffet style, but all three of our suggested methods work!

If you’re looking for a set up on the classy scale, a seated dinner would add a little formality, especially while your guests are going to be admiring the hard work you put into your tabletop decor.

The Moving style dinner is another excellent choice if you know your guests are likely to want to kick off their heels and eat while they dig their toes in the sand.

Garden Party

This type of wedding is just as relaxed as a beach wedding, but there’s no need to worry about sand in your shoes.

Garden Parties, like Beach Weddings, are lovely in their versatility. It’s easy to make your event more casual or formal, depending on your tastes by including a few small details.

Venue: La Jolla Women’s Club

Garden parties work perfectly for couples who want a romantic feel without overdoing it with excessive, expensive florals.

Charming tents fit right in with this theme and are fantastic for a little added shade for your guests during those peak hours in the sun.

Venue: Martin Johnson House

If you’ve got craft skills or are interested in DIY decor, this type of wedding would be perfect.

This theme is casual, and we’ve seen couples stick with traditional dining styles, such as a Buffet dinner, and love it.

A new and fun idea we would love to see during cocktail hour is a combination of a Buffet and a Picnic!

Encourage your guests to grab a basket and travel along an appetizer station, filling their baskets with tasty snacks as they go. At the end, offer guests small blankets to promote lawn lounging in groups!

Day/Brunch Wedding

Fun, comfortable, and finished before sunset, this type of wedding is a delightful treat we wish was more common!

Perfect for Sunday Events or couples who aren’t looking for a lot of fuss, just quality family time.

Photographer: Sara France Photography. Venue: Darlington House of La Jolla

Entertain your guests with some fun lawn games!

Incorporate vintage class with Croquet for that Victorian Era feel, or stick with the favorites like Corn Hole and Bocce Ball to please the crowd.

Photographer: Sean Walker Photography. Venue: Mt. Woodson Castle

Morning weddings are a great excuse to have creative cocktail bars too!

We’ve seen Mimosa Stations with fancy juice varieties and fruit toppings, but this Blood “Marry Me” Bar looks like a Sunday morning dream!

Photographer: Sean Walker Photography

Morning hours also mean perfect weather!

Here in San Diego, summer mornings are known to rival the evenings.

Photographer: Sara France Photography. Venue: Darlington House of La Jolla

Try a lighthearted floral plate to add to the Brunch vibe for your tablescape!

Photographer: Sara France Photography

Sunny mornings should come with all the right accessories, and we love the idea of parasols as wedding favors!

Photographer: Sara France Photography

Much like a Garden Party dining style, Buffets are perfect but make it a breakfast buffet, and we’re sure your guests will be thrilled!

A Moving style or having multiple Breakfast Stations would be a step up and provide a more extensive selection for guests who are picky eaters first thing in the morning.

Sand and Sun, Blush and Fun!

Beth and Brian had a blissful day in blush for their Wedding and Reception at the gorgeous Scripps Seaside Forum.

True Photography masterfully captured all of these amazing shots, bringing so much energy to each picture!

We love those hanging terrariums! The stunning ceremony arch, aisle arrangements, and bouquets were all the from Flora Glamour.

Beth and Brian’s Bridal Party had such a blast during their post-ceremony photoshoot.

We wish we could’ve joined them on their beach run!

This venue offers some of the best photo spots!

What’s better than soft sand and a cool sea breeze to give you that “beach glow” in all your pictures?

Dinner was inside where our capable staff set the tables and guests could enjoy the scenery out of the sun.

The room always looks so elegant with the classic draping in the background, pulling the attention of the guests to the effort put into the details the happy couple wants to be noticed.

Recently, trends have strayed away from the traditional full-tiered wedding cakes,

but Brian and Beth went through French Gourmet for this impressive pastry and wowed all their guests.

We wanted to thank Beth and Brian for choosing us to spend their special day with them!

They were an absolute delight to work with and we wish them all the best in their future together.

Modern Twist on Traditional

Jessica and Dave had a modern take on a traditional Filipino wedding ceremony and reception at the quietly stunning Martin Johnson House.

Jessica and her Bridesmaids all glowed!

The gorgeous rose gold dresses, styles customized to fit each individual’s personality, were such a complimentary color to the bright pops of purple.

To shake things up a bit, Dave had two Groomswomen!

He and the rest of the Groomsmen wore more traditional Filipino outfits, breezy formal and transparent button-down shirts.

Once the Bridal Party was all together, they painted a beautiful picture of rose gold, creams, plums, and lavenders.

The ceremony was out on the front lawn overlooking the sea and the day couldn’t have been more beautiful!

A traditional Filipino wedding ceremony is often conducted in a Catholic Church, but they incorporated many aspects of that traditional ceremony to theirs so as to bring forth the traditional values into their marriage.

In the black and white picture below, we see the Bride and groom wearing a garland of flowers.

This garland was woven into a circle and placed over their heads in an infinity symbol to represent their lasting promise to each other.

After the ceremony, the happy couple was able to escape to take some quiet time for themselves where Aldous Photography worked their magic and caught some priceless moments.

The Martin Johnson House has access to some of the most breathtaking spots to look out over the ocean.

Jessica and Dave chose to go with a rustic, vintage motif for their decor and we love all these tiny details!

The many custom doorknobs and lace were such a delicate and thoughtful touch!

Thankfully for Jessica and Dave, they had a brilliant Coordinator, Jenna Carino,  to help them achieve their vision!

After dinner, instead of cake, Dave and Jessica wanted to further celebrate the Filipino culture

by having us serve their guests with a colorful mix of desserts!

We provided an ice cream sundae station with coconut ice cream and a mountain of exciting toppings for each guest to serve themselves.

Dave’s family also brought traditional home-made Filipino desserts!

Everything was lovely and we felt so honored to be chosen to help spend this special day with Jessica and Dave!

We wish them all the best!

Featured Venue: Scripps Seaside Forum! | San Diego Event Venues

Breezy, Beautiful Ocean-Front Venue of Your Dreams

We just recently did a post about a spectacular wedding at this venue and thought we’d set the spotlight on the venue itself!

Thanks to True Photography who took all of these amazing shots, this venue takes our breath away!

If you haven’t noticed from these pictures, the views at Scripps Seaside Forum are phenomenal!

San Diego has some of the best beaches in California, but the waters in La Jolla are especially clear

and being there for a ceremony is like being on your own private island retreat.

Outside, there are multiple location options for a ceremony, cocktail hour, and general lounging spaces.

Each provides unique and priceless photos with incredible backdrops.

Inside, the dining and reception area can be separated by sliding wall panels, in case you want the dining area to be a surprise for your guests!

The room exudes warmth and artistry unique to the Scripps Main Hall and can be modified with drapes to your liking.

Here we can see the upper mezzanine level delicately shrouded by the elegant wall drapes.

It is an option that can add a more formal atmosphere to the theatre-like space.

We absolutely adore working at Scripps Seaside Forum and wanted to thank

all of the wonderful venue staff who are there at a moments notice if needed.

The events we’ve worked there in the past have been some of our absolute favorites!

Phoebe + John | Alyssa Boynton Photography | Scripps Seaside Forum

A Beach Wedding to set 2019 Standards!

Phoebe and John had the perfect weather for their water-front ceremony and reception at Scripps Seaside Forum.

Their invitations and Paperie were done by Minted and we are so impressed with this gorgeous watercolor work that flowed throughout their event!

Phoebe was shining in her gorgeous lace gown!

Phoebe’s dress was from Badgley Mischka Bridal.

John and his groomsmen were outfitted through Hugo Boss.

These two were so perfectly matched with their surroundings:

Relaxed, Bright, and Beautiful!

The Bridal Party looked so polished in their soft gray and slate attire.

Bridesmaids dresses from Show Me Your Mumu.

The stunning floral arrangements and ceremony Chuppah were products of the masterful craftsmanship of  Joel Garlejo.

We can’t help but be transfixed by Phoebe’s bouquet with all of its eye-catching unique blooms!

Twiggs Bakery Cafe delivered this casual yet clean looking nearly naked cake, perfectly fitting the wedding’s motif,

and had all the guests raving about the look and amazing flavors!

The ceremony area was breathtaking with the ocean so close

and the Chuppah draped gracefully with garlands of fresh eucalyptus.

Chuppah from Cedar and Pine Events.

It’s the tiny details, such as these hanging geometric ornaments,

that put that otherworldly touch of magic and romance onto a setting.

The ceremony was hypnotic and all attention was captivated

by the waves of genuine love cascading from John and Phoebe.

Ceremony officiated by Joann from Ceremonies De Vie.

It all came down to this magic moment…

…skillfully captured by the photographers Alyssa Boynton and Ashley Strong.

After the nuptials, cocktail hour commenced where our staff whipped up some tasty treats and drinks for the guests!

The tables were awash with royal blue goblets and marine napkins

to match Minted’s aquatic table numbers and escort cards.

Goblets and napkins by Hostess Haven.

Tables and chairs from Cedar and Pine Events.

After dinner, the dancing erupted in a flourish of fast spinning circles and

of course

the Hora!

To finish off the night, the cake was cut and promptly accompanied

by tiny flan tasters for each guest!

Huge thanks go out to John and Phoebe for including us in their special day!

We’re so appreciative of Rachel from Tres Chic Affairs for Coordinating all us vendors and working so hard!

Finally, one more shoutout to Alyssa Boynton Photography and

Ashley Strong Photography for these incredible pictures!
